No matter what adventure or quest Harry Potter found himself caught in, his success wouldn’t have been possible without the help of friends like Ron and Hermoine. They were able to act as a team and work together for a common good: defeat the dark wizard, Voldemort.

Although the series focuses on the triumph of good over evil, Rowling also emphasizes teamwork. There isn’t a single task where only one person came out victorious. In order to win, everyone had to work together as a team.

Never Give Up

Harry made many friends in his years at Hogwarts, but bad luck seemed to follow him everywhere. He was constantly trying to keep out of trouble or fighting to stay alive. Thankfully, his friends, guardians, and professors assured him that he had the one thing Voldemort never would: a team built on love instead of fear. Deep down, Harry knew he could never give up with his teammates by his side.  

Sometimes the most rewarding tasks aren’t the easiest. On days you feel like you want to give up, remember you have others relying on you to do your job. Throwing in the towel means you’re not just quitting on yourself, but also your team. If a 17-year-old wizard can beat an all-powerful Dark Lord, you can handle anything!

Invest in Your Team’s Growth

Neville Longbottom is one of the most underrated characters in the entire Harry Potter franchise. Seriously, he went from a clumsy amateur to a butt-kicking pro. His transformation wouldn’t have been possible without his friend’s encouragement. Neville’s newfound confidence helped him stand up to Voldemort and sever the final link to his immortal life.

Even though Neville was a terrible wizard at first, his classmates believed he could be great. Investing time into your team’s growth is vital for success. When you believe in your team and provide proper resources, you’ll see awesome results.

Keep an Open Mind

Keeping an open mind in a world full of magic sounds pretty easy, right? Wrong. Sometimes people are more than what meets the eye, even in the wizarding world. Professor Snape, for example, was practically hated and misjudged by many characters for being one of Voldemort’s former followers, belonging to the Slytherin house, and killing Dumbledore (even though it was Dumbledore’s idea). However, it was Professor Snape who secretly helped keep Harry alive all these years.  

It’s easy to let prejudices get in the way of your judgement. By keeping an open mind, you’ll ensure that everyone on your team has equal opportunities, including yourself. If you let someone’s appearance or preconceptions influence your first impression, you might miss out on an excellent team player.

Don’t Be Afraid to Accept Help

During their fourth year at Hogwarts, Harry’s name is drawn from the Goblet of Fire, forcing him to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. After finding out that the first round involves dragons, he gives Cedric Diggory, another Hogwart’s contestant, a heads up. Cedric was grateful towards Harry and returned the favor by giving him a tip on unlocking the next clue. Without this insight, Harry would have most likely failed the second round.

Accepting help, even if you don’t need it, can be beneficial. You never know what tips and tricks your colleagues have up their sleeves. Not to mention, sometimes additional help will get the job done faster and more efficiently. Your team is there for a reason, use them.

Utilize Each Other’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Harry, Ron, and Hermoine discover their first year that the Sorcerer’s stone, a rock that produces an immortality elixir, is hidden at Hogwarts. The moment they realize someone was on their way to steal it, the trio sets forth to save the day! However, they needed each other’s strengths and weaknesses to make it past all of the traps. Without Hermoine’s book smarts to get past the devil’s snare, Harry’s Quidditch skills to grab the flying key, or Ron’s wizard’s chess knowledge, they wouldn’t have been able to save the stone.

Utilizing your team’s strengths and weaknesses is an effective way to ensure the job gets done! It’s okay to be an expert in one field and not that skilled in another. Different skillsets are what make great teams.

Effective Teamwork Can Take Time

The characters in Harry Potter weren’t always good at the concept of teamwork. First off, the adults didn’t want the kids to join the anti-Voldemort secret society, the Order of the Phoenix. Not to mention, there were countless times where Ron threw a fit and refused to talk to either Harry or Hermoine. Teamwork is a major learning curve, and it can take awhile to get the hang of it.

You must trust your colleagues’ abilities, learn from past mistakes, inspire others, and communicate effectively to have a great team! Everyone on a team will have different skillsets, work preferences, and personalities. It’ll take time to learn and grow together, but you’ll get there!
